Practical sustainability for future generations

Doing the right thing — for the long term

We’ve been feeding Australian communities since 1927. We care about the people we serve, the farmers we work with, and the land that makes it all possible. That’s not a recent revelation — it’s been the foundation of this business from the beginning.

As a family-owned business built to last, sustainability at Simon George & Sons is about practical action — not promises.

We focus on doing the right thing for our customers, our growers, our communities and our people, making decisions that support long-term outcomes rather than short-term gains.

Where we've got to

We’ve taken care of the low-hanging fruit. Since launching our sustainability strategy, we’ve made real progress across energy, waste, sourcing and community — and our foundations remain strong.

An external lens on how we're tracking

For almost 10 years, we’ve reported to EcoVadis and been a registered member of Sedex — two of the world’s most recognised sustainability rating and ethical trade platforms. Together, they’re a key benchmark in how we measure, track and improve our performance across the business. They confirm that our efforts are paying off — we’re cutting waste, recycling more, tracking where our products come from, and constantly investing in our team’s safety and skills.

Where we're going: our five pillars

The first step towards reducing our carbon footprint is knowing how big it is and where it comes from. We’ve begun measuring our scope one and scope two emissions and are committed to working towards our reduction target by 2027. We’re also expanding our rooftop solar across our warehouse network and continuing to prioritise local, seasonal produce to help reduce food miles.

Since committing to circular organic waste, we’ve diverted over 340 tonnes of produce from landfill across our network, redirecting it to farms, feedlots, and community tables nationwide. In FY26 alone, we donated 173 tonnes to FareShare and End Food Waste Australia, turning surplus produce into 50,000+ nutritious meals for communities in need.

Beyond our own network, we work with customers and industry partners to reduce waste through smarter specification and portion control, processed produce solutions that improve yield, better forecasting and ordering visibility, and education around storage and handling.

We’re also targeting 100% circular organic waste across all regions by the end of 2027. Separately, we’re proud signatories to the Australian Food Pact — a national commitment to halving food waste in Australia by 2030.

Over 98% of our produce is Australian-grown, and at least a quarter is sourced directly from the farmers who grow it. We build long-term relationships with our growers. That means consistent demand, fair dealing, and clear communication on quality and specifications. We plan ahead each season, rather than relying on short-term spot buying. We’ve also published our Modern Slavery Statement for the sixth consecutive year because responsible sourcing doesn’t stop at the farm gate.

Our seasonal calendar and market reports already help customers choose what’s actually in season, and we update the calendar on our website annually to keep it current.

We’re the major supplier to remote community stores across the Northern Territory, North Queensland and the Torres Strait, running training programs in nutrition, safe food handling and storage. We also maintain 5%+ Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander representation in our team, and our work on Thursday Island continues towards a sustainable food ladder focused on employment, education and health outcomes.

As a family business operating across multiple states, we stay connected through long-term employment and career development, and by partnering with community organisations and clubs.

We’ve already delivered over 1,000 nutritious fruit and vegetable boxes to communities in need and clocked 1,800 volunteer hours across the country — and we’re aiming for 2,500 of each by 2027. Our team also has access to a confidential Employee Assistance Program.

Backed by systems, delivered by people

Sustainability isn’t achieved through policy alone.

It’s delivered every day by people making considered decisions — in buying, logistics, processing and service. Our teams are trained and empowered to make choices that support sustainable outcomes without compromising quality or reliability.
